It was a beautiful winter day today. In between errands, I went to the Plot Against Hunger garden at 10th and Barton to check on the turnips I had left snugged under leaves in November.
We’ve had some cold weather, including some sleety slick snow, so the turnip tops didn’t look that great, but when I separated the leaves and looked under them, I could see some nice looking little turnips.
They had quite a set of roots on them, so I trimmed those, along with the frosted tops and set them aside for delivery to AFAC.
While it’s nice to reap the results of the fall sowing, it’s also been nice to rest. I’ve begun to compile seed catalogs and think about possible garden plans for this spring. I’m also enjoying some other sewing, with almost immediate harvests and a lot less weeding. I made this happy little tooth, obviously NOT uneasy under his crown.
Then I sewed this treeling, also happy, probably because it’s so warm on the bookshelf.
Then I took a family portrait. I have a feeling I’m only getting started here.

They have been remarkably fun and are cheerful little things. I’m thinking of a table runner next, using a penny rug pattern, but will need to create that design. How is your painting coming?

The treeling almost seems as though its leaves might start moving, but I also like the little tooth, who looks very pleased with himself. I may do a table runner next…but of course, spring is just around the corner!

I thought of you this week–I was in a shop with a lot of primitive-style felt runners and decorative pieces, heavy on the penny rug designs, which I love. But nothing was as cute as that tree!

Yes, I like the tree, too. I’ve got another order of felt and am thinking rather than the penny design for the runner, I should just sew on some organic designs–leaves, plants, maybe veggies! It will need some thought. In the meantime, keep up your beautiful weaving!

What is your favorite way to make turnips?

Favorite? Roasted with carrots, onions, garlic, squash and olive oil. Close second, mashed with butter. They’re also great in stews.
