A few years ago I was in line at the grocery when a young man walked up behind me holding a bouquet of roses. Yup, it was Valentine’s Day. I had a basket full of stuff, so I thought he might want to go in front of me. I said, “Is that all you’ve got?”

He got a deer in the headlights look and said, “I bought her candy and I’m taking her out to dinner, too.”
Having bought the candies, I needed packaging for them, so made this envelope, with a button from my favorite dress of all time…
I started laughing. When I got control of myself, I said, “I was wondering if you wanted to go in front of me.”
I decorated the back of the envelope as well…
Do we need another holiday to make us feel inadequate? As comedian Jim Gaffigan says in a recent video, if this is the only day you’re telling people you love that you love them, you may be in trouble. Some long married friends of mine admitted last weekend that they’ve given each other a pass on Valentine’s Day for quite a few years. On the other hand, if you want an excuse to treat someone, it works marvelously.
And here it is with 2 dozen chocolate hearts inside. I wrapped it up and sent it off to my mother…

I have never celebrated Valentines Day. It was never celebrated here when I was young and it is only in the past twenty or so years that commercial interests have promoted it. As it was never intended to be a day for anyone else but lovers it surprises me, though it shouldn’t I know, that now everyone has to be remembered on the day. [Can you tell, I’m a bit bah, hum-buggy about the whole thing really. I apologise for my curmudgeonlyness! 🙂 ]
However my bah-humbuggy-ness does not detract from your beautiful stitching and your wish to give your mother something delectable to enjoy. 🙂 And I enjoyed your tale of the young man who was obviously about to have a major panic attack for fear of not having done enough to impress his young love ….. 😀

I tell you, that poor guy put me off Valentine’s Day for good! At least the notion that a dozen roses aren’t enough. Or a dinner. Or candy. Yipes! It’s like blackmail! It’s always been sort of a greeting card holiday in the States. I remember getting bunches of little punch-out cards as a child for classmates. But I’ve always given it a pass as an adult, except for something fun to give someone pleasure. I pretty much tune in to commerce when I need to shop. Letting it convince you you need diamonds or chocolate is a road to…hmmm…dissatisfaction at the least. No need to apologize for curmudgeon tendencies. You see I have my own!

What a funny story! Poor guy–you’ve scarred him. And how do you know Lake Champlain chocolates?! Aren’t they fab? The company grew up right across the lake (Champlain) in Burlington and one of the original partners is now a chocolatier in Buffalo. I lived in Buffalo for years and went to chocolate/ wine pairings that he held. Connections! Oh, and your little gift bag is perfect–what a special gift!

Oh my. Chocolate and wine. Two of life’s many pleasures. I first saw a bar of Lake Champlain chocolate when I was up in Vermont some years ago and now there’s always a display of it at my grocery. Love the stuff in many of its guises. Is Buffalo where you learned to make chocolate as well?

I love the envelope you made! It’s a gift in and of itself. The chocolates are a bonus. I enjoyed the story of the young man with roses, too. Made me chuckle although it is a little sad that the roses might not have been enough. My husband and I don’t make much of Valentine’s Day. We exchange cards, and if one of us thinks of it, we’ll bring home some chocolate, but we do that sort of thing throughout the year as well. For no other reason that Just Because. 🙂
