Late this week, I noticed some of the daffodils doing face plants in the dirt. They are optimistic, tough little flowers and can withstand the cold. But I think they may have heard about the snow.
These crab apple blossoms have not heard yet and are at a stage where the snow will not be helpful.
The latest forecast I’ve heard is for a nor’easter up the coast dumping either 2-5 inches or 10-13 depending on storm track. I don’t mind; it’s kind of exciting. And given the lateness of the year, the snow won’t be around long. Nor will the blossoms and buds that were tricked by 70 degree weather in February. I haven’t thought much about the storm, since I will probably just hunker down and enjoy it. What I did think about today was getting construction paper to make envelopes.
A while back, Pauline, the Contented Crafter announced the availability of hand made cards. I bought two kinds, one set for me and one set, called Carnaby Street, for my mother, whose birthday was Saturday.
The cards come without envelopes because once those are added in, the postal rate on the cards shoots way up. Pauline educated us in a blog about how to make made to measure envelopes, so I thought I would do that.
The thing is, once I got the cards, I realized the envelope they came in was the perfect template. I just traced it on the construction paper, cut, folded and glued. My mother is thrilled with her cards, which I sent with envelopes I had on hand. And I’m thrilled with my cards and the opportunity to match them up with colored construction paper and create custom envelopes.
Well Lisa, you are just too clever for words! I wonder how many millennia it would have taken me to think about deconstructing the existing envelope and making a template? 😀 Gah!! 😀 I’m obviously NOT the brightest card in the pack!! 😀
I love the colours you have chosen for the cards, they really add something wonderful – and I love what you have done so much I shall reblog this on the CC blog and share your cleverness if I may.
In the meantime, hunker down and enjoy your snow storm – Winter has made a quick stop by here, just to let us know that 4 weeks of summer is enough and he is waiting in the wings!! I’m not terribly impressed with this climate change I have to say.

I am a lazy person, so the template seemed quite good to me! Do reblog, thanks so much. I meant to email you earlier because Mom was really thrilled (I sent her the two postcards so she could see your people and she really loved the gardening one). “She’s so talented,” she said. Remember she has a dangler as well! I told her about the website and the patterns on clothes and bags, but she doesn’t have internet (blast; it would be nice to send her photos). In any event, I fully expect to use your envelope making formula in the future–just not this time. Now I’ve got lots of construction paper…who knows where that may lead?

Reblogged this on The Contented Crafter and commented:
Meet my friend Lisa, who adds another dimension into making your own envelopes 🙂

Pauline’s blog shows a way if you don’t have a template, too. I really enjoyed doing these.

I too bought a collection of cards but have not yet made any envelopes. Your colored versions are wonderful, and just in time for spring. How nice to gift a set to your mom as well.
I just heard about the anticipated storms. Will you be at work when they hit and if so, do they shut places down early and send you home? I’m glad you can take the train to and from so that you don’t have to drive in that mess. Enjoy the beauty of the snow.

PS Face-planting daffodils made me laugh.

Hi Alys! The face planting daffodils struck me during the week. Then the snow predictions came. I accidentally deleted your first comment and can’t find comments to reinstate it as WordPress has changed things again. I’ll be snug at home when it starts to snow. It will depend how much there is, but I think lots of things will be shut down. They’ll probably be telling people to work at home if government is open. I’m very glad I don’t have to be in a car! If you still have the envelope the cards came in, just deconstruct!

I’ve been following the news on the east coast weather, so I’m glad to hear you can be at home. I probably shouldn’t mention that it’s 81 degrees here today. Crazy!
Did Kelly share our dates in DC? We’ll be arriving late on the 7th and staying through the 11th. Then we’re taking a train to New York. Are you in town?

Woo hoo! I’d love to see you on the 8th or 9th. Want to see Dumbarton Oaks???? If your weekend is full already, let me know what weekday would work and I’ll take a day off. FYI DOaks is closed Mondays…

Such a snappy post to start the week. (Sunny right now in central Maine, but the snow’s acoming!)
Those cards are beautiful. Frame-worthy, that’s for sure,

Thanks, Laurie! It’s looking more and more like wintry mix, here, which is worse than more snow. Hoping for about 7 inches…

Right now, snow, and that’s what’s predicted for our neck of the woods. So far, not too much, but the day is still young 😉 Off to make apple pie.

I love your resourcefulness! For some reason, your post made me think of Mr. Rogers showing kids how to turn used envelopes inside out to re-use. The kids thought that was great! 🙂

Oh my gosh. I missed that one! Making the envelopes was fun, though.

The cards and envelopes look great, Lisa.
I’m not envying the snow you may have coming…I fear it means that we’ll eventually get the tail end of your weather – and things had just started brightening up here!

I always envision those storms blowing off to Greenland, but I guess they take a different route. I hope it blows itself out before getting to you. We’re getting less snow than initially predicted here, but may have some wintry mix.

I admire your optimism in face of the storm coming on you, but I suppose it is better to take it lightly. The cards are beautiful and what a good idea to make your own envelopes. I may give it a try.

Thanks, Sylvie! It looks like we’ll have melting each day during the week, so I’m hoping the snow and sleet and freezing rain (no clue about actual accumulation) will be gone quickly. I do like choosing the color of my envelopes…

The daffodil face plant made me laugh out loud. Any daffodils here would be daffcicles by now. We are in full blizzard mode. Wild winds, groaning house, and dancing trees. As long as the power stays on, I’m enjoying it. But I do worry that your new growth down there will be hit hard. These storms are tough on farmers.

orchards that started to blossom will definitely be hit. I don’t think anyone here had got past seeds in the ground stage, but it could delay planting at this point. I hope your power’s still on!

They seem to have come through the storm really well. I like them, too–shape, colors, timing, foliage. It’s always good to see them!

My cards arrived, too, and I love them. I’d thought of framing them for my office. Pauline is a talented woman, as are you!
My daffodils face planted too in the 10 degree weather. Even though we barely got an inch out of that storm, the snow stayed around for days.
Perhaps I’ll see you in DC with Alys and Kelly. I’ll be up late on Friday, heading back home early on Sunday.
