Much More To Do

Well, the kitchen is in!  I do like it a lot. Goodness, even though this contractor was quite clean, what a mess that dust is, even getting into the back reaches of my place.  I cleaned Friday night and all day yesterday, along with putting things in the cupboards.  In spite of my good intentions, I did no culling.  Over the next few months as I settle in and rearrange, I will doubtless get rid of a few things.  But on to the pictures:

This is the view from the doorway. If you look closely, you’ll see the paint swatches taped to the walls.

It took twelve hours to unpack, put things where I thought they might work, haul out the trash, and paint the woodwork in preparation for putting the curtains back up and moving more furniture.  It’s been 28 years since I moved, and it’s all coming back to me…but a friend is coming over today to help with the last of it, at which point I will move back in.  Then think about the painting, which shouldn’t take long, but for drop cloths and taping…

Fridge and sink to the left as you walk in the door. I had wanted the door handles on the right, but I wouldn’t have had access to one of the crisper compartments had we stuck with that. It’s a tight space, and we thought we had allowed, but…this will work.

The tall storage cabinet is really nice, and I have just about filled it.

I was able to put all my canning equipment and jars in the top compartment. Whew, now it’s out of my closet.

So other than a few pieces of furniture being moved and more trash taken out, I have only to think about paint.  I’m looking at a tropical sea color or an Italian villa color.  As I stare at the paint chips, I’ll undoubtedly decide.

Long view from the window. Next week: back to the garden!

If you’re local, the folks who did it are Cameo Kitchens in Falls Church.  All this in 18 working days!  With a Tuesday start and a Monday holiday it was 3 1/2 weeks on the calendar.  I only wish they painted, too!

WOW! That looks great Lisa 😀 What a transformation. 18 days seems really good considering all the work they did. Of course, I love the paint swatches you have taped to the wall, I would love to paint my craft room in similar colours. Soon I’ll get a go on that. I hope you got my email a few weeks back. Thanks again for the beautiful gift 😀 Boomdee x

I am so happy for you – how satisfying to see a job well done; it looks lived in already – I’m sure you’ll be glad to move back home again. Having cupboards that goes all the way to the ceiling is great; the top of my cupboards must be caked with grime – I dare not look.

  4. Fabulous – that fridge space does look tight but the cooker looks fab-u-lous!! Can’t wait to see what colour you choose 🙂 My kitchen is so aged and worn and ‘tired’ as they say in the trade yours looks like a small miracle to me ❤ It was a remarkably quick turn around wasn't it!

28 years! I moved out of a place I had been living for 20 years a couple of years ago.The culling was merciless.
Great kitchen you have ( I would pick the sea colour )!

Oh, beautiful! And although the project moved right along, it must be so good to be home again. After all, home is best. Looking forward to seeing which colors you pick.

  9. Not sure quite what the tropical sea colour would look like, but we had a good (greenish) one in Newark, and pale green is considered a calming colour for psychotherapy 🙂 Great kitchen. If we ever finish the garden we might do something with our internal decoration. 🙂

  10. Lisa, it looks terrific! What a transformation. I love the new layout, the pretty floor and all that storage! How nice to have room up top for all your canning materials, and now extra space in your closet. It looks lighter and brighter. I’m looking forward to seeing what color you choose. That will add another dimension as well. What did you decide to do with the area with the desk?

As for the grime from the former kitchen, I imagine the newer appliances and ventilation will make a huge difference. I recently helped a friend organize her kitchen and we found grease/grime everywhere. She too now has a newer cook top and vent. It makes such a difference.

The kitchen is done in record time. I’m so happy for you.

Thanks Alys! I almost ordered a bar height desk before the remodel was finished. Now I’m glad I didn’t. I think I’m going to the Container Store to see whether I can get something similar using their system and add shelves like you were talking about when you were here. I’ve also found a storage piece for the opposite side of that wall near the dining table. It’s going to be a process. I want to paint before I do the desk/shelving. I cooked on the stove and used the oven function of the microwave last night. It’s a learning process!

      • Waiting to live with the new changes is often wise. I bought new chairs for our expanding living room (12 years ago) and they didn’t fit the shape or size, even though I had measured. We just lived with them for awhile. I wasn’t all that dissapointed when the cats and kids did what cats and kids do. 🙂 The replacement chairs are better scaled, more comfortable and, though cat-clawed, it doesn’t show due to the pattern. I remember our new oven. I didn’t know how to turn it on! Good times. You’re getting there.
