You may have heard that it’s been hot here. Even for me, it’s been hot. Just walking outside, not even exerting myself, I started sweating. But it’s already broken, thank goodness. The plants are looking a bit tired of the heat.
The sunflowers are not wilting. They are amazing.
I took a walk around the garden, which I don’t normally do, looking at other people’s plots this week. Sunflowers!!! They are so lovely. I can almost feel them smiling when I look at them.
It does look like artist portrayals of the sun, petals being the blaze…
Someone, a better gardener than I, has eggplant! My eggplant have not been successful the past few years.
I have failed in eggplant production in recent years. These two are marvelous.
Someone is growing what may well be winter squash. And lovely they are!
Another gardener has planted artichokes , which I did not realize looked so much like thistles at a certain stage. Their foliage always makes me think of Audrey the man-eating plant from Little Shop of Horrors.
The bees are thriving under the care of their beekeeper.
They have doubled in size so far.
And I’m enjoying the flowers they work on.
This week I plan to clear some things out so I can have space to plant some fall crops. We’ll see how that goes, as the whole garden is rife with evil bunnies with glowing eyes.

Oh, those darn rodents! Currently, I am dealing with a young bunny and uncommonly, a woodchuck, which are driving the dog nuts as she tries to chase them through my gardens – argh!
A Hav-a-hart trap is set, fingers crossed.
Your vase of flowers is lovely. Nothing says ‘Summer’ to me like a bouquet of zinnias. ❤

Oh, goodness. Woodchucks! They have a bigger appetite than rabbits. I’d let the dog chase!!!

She cornered the woodchuck under the shed and came away with a bite and now seems tender in one of her legs. I’m hoping the critter got the idea that he wasn’t welcome here, but again Wren won’t be facing down a full grown one if we can help it.

A lovely wander, thanks Lisa! Generally I get beaten in most things by superior gardeners (yourself included) but I can win with my artichokes! Yes, they are a thistle! I have thirty of them (grown from seed) and currently they are taller than me and each takes up as much width as my car! Goodness knows what will happen once they start flowering! And there’s little room in the garden for not much else!

I’ve never grown them, but yes they are huge!!! And there wouldn’t be much room left for anything else.

Oh no, the evil bunnies are back 😀 Though I do note how ‘evil’ and ‘bunnies’ really don’t go together……… The sunflowers are beautiful and I’ll take them any day over artichokes. Glad to hear its cooling a little for you.

Didn’t you see how their eyes gleam? You only think the two don’t go together because they haven’t assaulted your garden. It’s now perfect cycling weather–about 90, give or take a degree…

I did see the gleaming eyes 🙂 I used to have possums and they could destroy a garden overnight and often did. I hated them with a passion. They not only destroy gardens they also decimated our native bird population, feasting on their eggs every spring and multiplying so fast they almost outnumbered sheep! They are an unwanted Australian import and this entire country has waged a 30 year war on them and they are still here. And to make matters worse they are protected in Australia. They drove me so nuts that I once had the idea of building a movable country long fence that started on the east coast and moved slowly across the islands to the west coast, pushing all the possums into the Tasman sea where they could make their ways back home – or not. Truly not my finest hour and I still struggle to feel any humane feelings towards the beasts.

ah yes, the week as with the garden will just have to be splendid – we have new variety of primrose yellow sunflower which is just out. I will post soon,. You’rs look utterly splendid.

They are evil!!! Too bad they weren’t red and then they’d really look demonic. I’m going to the garden tonight to do a little work. With luck I won’t see the bunny cabal meeting…

Well, those days last week were brutal with the 120 degree heat indexes. Now, I’m back to liking it. We don’t get much relief down here until mid-October–most of September is technically summer yet! But in upstate NY, it might make a difference. For now, I’m just going to revel in being warm and seeing sunflowers!

Artichokes are probably still the main vegetable crop in Castroville, the Artichoke Capital of the World. I have never grown them. It seems like such minimal product for all the space it occupies.

We don’t see too many rabbits here, probably because of all the foxes and coyotes. I am looking forward to late summer and early autumn produce!
