One of the things I like about my neighborhood is that wildlife presents itself for the alert passer-by. I was in my living room when I noticed some people walking up the steps toward the shops. The man looked up and then turned back to look up again. I walked to the window, curious, and saw this perched on a limb above what is often a squirrel playground…
The funny thing is that several other people walked by and never looked up. I have seen foxes, coyotes, deer, raccoons, opossums, and all manner of birds I never expected to see in town (pileated woodpeckers, for instance) just by looking around.
I love seeing the big hunters because I know they will keep the rodent population down. That seems to be what this little guy was looking for—some chipmunks or mice in the ivy. I hope he or she (I can’t sex juvenile hawks) finds something tasty before the afternoon is over. What a treat for a grey day—and thanks to the alert neighbor for sending me a clue to look out.
Well spotted, Lisa.

That little guy sure blends in well to his surroundings. I would never see it if not for your photograph. I love walking because I see more that way. I hope your hawk eventually found a bite of dinner somewhere.

Me too, Marlene! It was small, but looked pretty well fed.

Wildlife watching is so rewarding. Hope this one takes care of a few rodents for you!

A few years ago, we were overrun with squirrels and a hawk moved in and now we have a reasonable number of them. I do love watching them looking for food. and of course, they’re so beautiful.

What a lovely thing to see. I suppose a squirrel playground and a hawk buffet are quite similar. 🙂

A great catch Lisa – not just to have spied it but to have got the pictures as well!

Thanks, Bruce! I had been looking at my small camera and set it down right by the window, so it was handy when I saw the bird!

I have a hawk of some sort that hangs out in a tree near my bird feeders. A few times, it’s tried for a dove. So far, I’ve only found one pile of feathers, but I know when the hawk’s around because everything goes suddenly silent. I have noticed that the few rats who’d come to feast on fallen birdseed are gone; I suspect I know who took care of them!
For a while, there were some feral cats who were stalking and sometimes catching my birds. Then, the coyotes showed up; I spotted them trotting down the middle of the parking lot in the middle of the night. In time, the cats disappeared, and once they were gone, so were the coyotes. Welcome to the balance of nature, suburban style!

A friend of mine calls bird feeders Hawk MacDonalds! There IS a balance, as various predators have shown up to hunt various things. Foxes came for the rabbits, hawks came for the squirrels, and of course there are plenty of mice, chipmunks and rats for all…

I liked when he fluffed his feathers like some sort of superhero from the comics. With luck, his skills got him dinner elsewhere. Happy new year to you, too, Kelly!
